Cariad - Crew List
(in order of appearance):

Paul (Captain)
Back in prehistoric days our Michigan man, as befitted a true son of Detroit, had a real gas-guzzling power boat
but he's been reformed for a long time now.  He may have put almost as many road as sea miles on his first sail boat "Bottoms Up",
trailering her from the Bay Area, to a Canadian dock near Detroit, and back again back in the 80's to early 90's,
but he got solid "sea" experience sailing her around the Great Lakes that helped with choosing his latest vessel.
Based on other owner's testimonials, he made a great choice in the Caliber 38, s.v. Cariad.
Thanks to Ron for sharing one of his
early Cariad adventures here.

Adrian (Alameda to Catalina)
Slept half the trip.  Caused the only excitement of the Catalina leg by accidentally turning off the autopilot in the middle of the night.
Started every watch with a cup of tea, (thanking heavens for a gimbaled stove).
Comfort food - instant oatmeal.  Got Whickey-Whacked in Avalon.
T-t-t-took t-t-three hours to warm up after a t-t-t-wenty-minute swim in the harbor.

Wendy (Catalina to San Diego, and beyond)
Shnookums showed up with sister Lori and proceeded to take charge of the kitchen galley.
Renamed the stern of the boat "the front", because that's what you see when you look out of the main cabin.
T-t-t-took t-t-two hours to get in for a f-f-f-five-minute swim, then kept her hair dry until the sun shower.
Didn't get Whickey-Whacked in Avalon.

Kosta (Baja Ha-Ha)
Benneteau-boy (he has his own 40-ish footer) won't be getting Whickey-Whacked anywhere because he is on some kind of diet that only allows for 8-year old brandy, and those W-Ws have a few contaminants.  He'll be good company for the Baja Ha-Ha and a good crew member if he can remember who is the captain!
Read how he lost his glasses, down at Baja, in the trip report.

Edda (Baja Ha-Ha)
I missed the farewell party where she was recruited but she sounds like a seasoned sailor who was a strong addition to the crew for the Baja Ha-Ha.
She’s heading back to the Bay Area W.E. 11/16/03.

Brian
Brian is more of a water-skier but he has spent many a day sailing, with Paul, on the (San Francisco) bay and has probably done Santa-Cruz and  Delta trips too, (which is more than me of late). He has also spent many years before the mast as Chief Mate of the S.V. Mokros, a clean-lined cruiser home-ported in Minnesota.

Simone (hotel facilities)
Simone is quick to point out that she will NOT be much involved in any sailing, (she will be staying in a nearby hotel), and will certainly not be helping out with any of the maintenance chores. If you read about
Simone’s introduction, to boat maintenance, you will understand why!
So why is she in this crew summary? Well, in exchange for giving her cousin access to a decent shower, for a few days, she gets a good excuse to head for a warmer climate during the winter.

Michael ("Bro") Trip notes: "Ludicrous Speed"
Has been on Paul's boat around the Bay a few times, and shuttled between that boat and the pier in the dingy out at Capitola.
Beyond that he once took out a one-man sailboat around a small cove at a Club Med and managed to bring it back in one piece,
and almost lost his lunch during a ferry crossing in rough seas between Spain and Morocco.

Andrea
Whether you realize it or not, Andrea has been sailing for most her life. She started out on Lake Superior in her Dad's 24 foot Northstar.
As you know, Lake Superior can be pretty treacherous, so crossing the Sea of Cortez should be no problem……
Then again, what could be wrong with being south of the Tropic of Cancer.....warm weather, and warm seas......

Denise (trip pictures trip log)
"My brother-in-law was born in the Azores and was a harbor master in Bethel Island from 1976 until 1986. I spent many long trips on his 18' sailboat around the (Sacramento River) Delta where I learned the tricks and talents of sailing the old fashioned way, (he hated using a motor even when there was only a tiny puff of wind). I have since sailed on larger boats as well, including Paul's, and I LOVE being on the water!"

Ron (Bro’s brother)
He snow skis, he water skis, he barefoot skis, and he sails over water as he sails through life, with ease!
He is another of the Bay, Santa Cruz and Delta contingent.  Partey!
Here is a tale from one of his
early Cariad adventures.
In case you have actually
read his story, you may be in the market for some steer manure.

Rob Stivers
Skipper in training. Greatest desire is to sail around the world. This Baja Bash trip will prove either a) he loves ocean sailing and fears no wave, or b) will stick to racing in the Oakland Estuary. Rob's looking forward to using his Spanish-speaking skills during the trip. He can fluently say "Help me, my dog's on fire!" in 5 languages, which god knows will come in handy in a Mexican prison. (by Leticia).

Ismael Moreno (aka: Smiley, aka: Cabin Boy - Leticia Stivers' cousin's husband)
Sailing experience: zero. Storage engineer for Sun Microsystems, born and raised in California but relocated to Colorado in 1999. Missing the ocean and fresh seafood but hey, we get all four seasons and the chance to visit family once a year...harrass them, cause the uproars and leave.
Favorite things are Chivas Whisky and crude humor. Least favorite things rebellious teenagers and jail. Hoping to make it out of his first sailing trip with all his limbs and a cruder sense of humor. Oh right and more friendships and memories. This is going to be a great adventure!

Jim Troutner (he’s with Nancy)
Jim, signed up for the last leg from Monterey to Alameda, is more usually "sailing" a humongous house boat on Bullards Bar, frightening fish with his Waverunner or carving turns while water-skiing.

Nancy Troutner (she’s with Jim)
Sail boat virgin, signed up for the last leg from Monterey to Alameda, travelling with Jim.
