Denise’s Cariad Adventure
January 10th thru 18th, 2004

Saturday, January 10th
I arrived in PV and called Paul. They had gotten in a short time before and were having a beer at Victor's Place in the Marina. All I had to do was ask someone, right?? So, I walked out and started around the marina, asking as I went along, "hey senorita, want to go whale watching?" .. "no, but do you know where Victor's Place is?" .... shake of the head. You would think that a place that serves 10 peso beers with a free shot of tequila would be better known than that. Anyway, I finally found Paul, Andrea, Brian and Sparky (Mark). They had lots of wild stories to tell me about hangovers, throwing up, almost broken knees and the "perfect storm" that Paul and Andrea had to endure the night before. It was an exciting story but it also meant that we had to keep an eye out for the weather.

Sunday, January 11
Andrea went up the mast today to fix something that broke off during the storm. All of us were so intent on what was going on, that we didn't realize we had an audience until she was all done. As soon as she touched down on the deck, applause broke out at Victor's Place. Andrea, Brian and I went into town on the bus (the way they drive, we kept thinking the brakes were going to give out at any second) and did some sightseeing and shopping while Paul took care of some business. I don't have to worry about getting a sunburn cause it's so overcast, but I like the temp (about 80). We still walk around in our shorts!

Monday, January 12
Everyone had their laundry done today. It seems that almost all of Paul's clothing had gotten wet in the storm when the water came in through an open porthole. We said goodbye to Mark. I will be moving onto the boat, although it doesn't look like we will be leaving tomorrow as planned due to the weather.

Tuesday, January 13
Still lots of talk about rain and every night there are thunderstorms. If it doesn't clear up by Thursday morning, I'll have to fly back from here since I have to be back to work on Monday. Brian and Andrea are talking about delaying their flight too. We cooked and prepared for the voyage anyway.

Wednesday, January 14
It looks like we will be able to leave tomorrow morning after all. Andrea and I went to Wal Mart to get groceries and provision the boat. Brian and Andrea changed their flight to leave Cabo the following Thursday. We are starting to become part of the neighborhood here and the people are genuinely friendly.

Thursday, January 15
We departed at 10 a.m. to Cabo. There were squalls here and there as we traveled, so we kept the rain gear handy.

Since we were running all day and all night, we took 2 hour shifts throughout the dark hours. I took this picture of the rain just about sunset. We had to keep an eye on the auto pilot and the radar. Rain continued throughout the day and night. We just tried to stay dry! It was hard to sleep since the boat was pretty bumpy. We did manage to sail for part of the evening. Paul pulled out the "sling" so he could sleep without falling off the couch!

Friday, January 16
More rain squalls throughout the day, but it sure made for some
fantastic sunsets. This evening the sky above us cleared up completely and when I was awakened for my night shift, the stars were so bright that one planet was reflected in the water. We make "wildlife" sightings every day and we have seen whales, porpoise and one jumping durado. We also saw a container ship in the distance.

Saturday, January 17
Today was beautiful and completely calm. Of course, this also meant we had to motor all the way to Cabo. We expect to arrive some time after midnight. We all came out on deck, spread out and took naps. The sky was sunny and clear and actually this was the warmest day since I arrived a week ago. We cooked
a hot meal and enjoyed having our appetites. We arrived in Cabo about 12:30 a.m. and were directed to a spot. Since I am leaving tomorrow, we all jumped ship and went to Squid Roe to see the natives. It was very interesting arriving at a club at 1:00 in the morning, completely sober and watching the young in their drunken state. It was great to sleep in a bed that wasn't moving around and I think we're all glad to finally stop. It was 300 miles and 60 hours from PV to Cabo.

Sunday, January 18
We got up this morning and had a nice breakfast on the marina. Although I experienced absolutely no seasickness while moving, my stomach had a little problem with being back on land. I was glad to get on the shuttle to the airport because when I was moving the swaying motion went away! Paul expects Rob and his cousin to arrive today and Brian and Andrea went looking for a hotel. I'm very glad I got to share some of the adventure in Paul's trip and we are all looking forward to his return (I think he is getting a little homesick too, his first words to me when I arrived were "do I still have a job?").
