Recommended links – mountain bike clubs and advocacy.

IMBA – International Mountain Bike Association. Guess what they are into.

BTCEB – Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay.
"BTCEB is the second oldest mountain bike advocacy group in the United States."
"We are proud to be an IMBA affiliate club and we are one of the founding clubs of IMBA!"
Most of their activity takes place over the hill, so I haven’t yet been to an event, but they are very active if you are in the area.

ROMP – Responsible Organized Mountain Pedalers (ROMP) are the oldest off-road cycling advocacy group in the Bay Area.
Presently, they have about 400 members who are concerned with trail access in the San Francisco South Bay and Peninsula regions.

Team Wrong Way – This is a lively looking bunch of people. Note: The index page has a lot of pictures so may be slow to load.
Their advocacy section "participates in many activities that benefit mountain biking in the Bay Area of California."

The great mixed-use trail debate: Some outdoor types are opposed to mountain bikes on trails because some cyclists ride dangerously and because they believe that knobbly tires tear up the trail. I can imagine some riders going too fast to stop, and, going too fast and close to hikers or horse, but I don’t think that is a reason to ban ALL cyclists from trails. As for the "tearing up the trail part", if you have ever seen what shod horse hooves do to a soft dirt trail then compared it objectively with mountain bike tracks in the same area, you may consider bikes to be the lesser of two evils.
